Although I
have been a Weim breeder since 1978, field work did not become a focus
for us that early, mainly because we only had the WCA Shooting Dog Ratings to enter
and we were doing a lot of obedience, tracking, etc. After the AKC
Hunt Tests started around 1989, we generally just stopped after JH.
But, then I realized how poorly Weimaraners were in field work.
Show breeders bred only for shows and the field ability was just not
there! Several well bred show dogs attending various events would
not acknowledge a bird at all! And, so, I decided to pursue
enhancing field ability in our dogs. We had previously been active
in field trials and finished a Field Champion, but it was clear that
these were events that we could not push on our puppy owners. The
ones that tried Field Trials did not like the clickish, competitive, unfriendly
atmosphere. However, the AKC HT events were welcoming and everyone
wanted their dogs to be successful. In addition, it was fairly
easy to find people to train with for the 3 levels. And so, they began
to attend and earn JH and then SH and then finally MH! Even more
encouraging is that 4 of our pups have earned Prize II and III in NAVHDA
UT test. And we are still pursuing that elusive Prize 1!!
In 2005, I bred our bitch Beka (Ch. Silversmith Diamond Scribbles, JH NRD NSD V BROM/FROM) to Hudson (Ch. Camelot's Go For The Gold, JH BROM/FROM) because I believed that Beka showed excellent field ability and because Hudson was sired by Ch. Smoky City Mob Boss who was very close to becoming a Dual Champion. This resulted in 6 pups, 5 Champions, 5 JHs, 3 SHs and 2 MH bitches. One of those bitches was Eva - Ch. Silversmith Blosser Evolution, MH SDX NRD VX BROM/FROM- (owned by Merry Woodham) -who started our journey to achieving excellence in both conformation and prey drive. She was bred 3 times to Ch. Smokey Topaz Gray Hawk, MH CD NRD NA VX BROM/FROM (owned by Kelly Hamby)and they produced 9 Champions of which 4 are Ch/MH pups - which is still a WCA record. Three of those bitch pups - Catcher, DeLou, Seneca became fantastic and reliable producers of show/field litters. We are now working on 5th and 6th generations from Beka x Hudson.
WCA offers titles of Bench Register of Merit (BROM) earned by dogs whose pups become Champions and for their wins in conformation events. Field Register of Merit (FROM) is earned by the progeny of dogs earning field titles including FC, AFC WCA ratings titles and AKC HT titles. This should be the ultimate goal for Dual Weimaraner breeders. It is a small, elite club - those RARE Weims that have earned both BROM and FROM produce pups that excel in BOTH show and field. We are honored to have 4 members in this elite list of only 13 dogs. With more in the pipeline!
We believe that Conformation showing to achieve a bench Championship is a "necessary evil." In reality, it is on their pedigrees to show that they have the necessary correct conformation. Once the dog earns the Ch or GCh they are finished with showing. We advise against "specialing" and to instead use the time and money for field training. We show our dogs and train for field at the same time. But during HT season, we mainly train and attend HTs going back to showing when HT season ends in our area around first of April.
It took over 15 yrs, but we were able to find the strong prey drive and hunting genes within the US show lines and have never used any dogs from the "pointer" lines.
We are so enormously proud of our outstanding, versatile Silversmith Weimaraners who have earned the AKC MASTER HUNTER title!! Silversmith has produced more MH Weimaraners than any other breeders in the US. This is entirely due to their excellent hunting/prey drive genes and to their owners who are motivated to achieve their dogs highest potential. I now present pics of all of these awesome dogs.
